Generally I can't say that I can stand to see other men get their man muscles cut in half and smile. Writer/Producer/Director Mitchell Lichtenstein has given me that reason.
Dawn is a young woman trying to balance her religiously driven open celibacy and her natural sexual libido. The hard nosed mentality Dawn shares with her brothers and sisters of abstinence, is challenged when Tobey enters the frame. Tobey, a sex starved youth himself, works Dawn until a fateful afternoon leaves Tobey shaft-less and Dawn scarred for life.
Through the many hints and nudges that Lichtenstein gives, such as the nuclear towers, vaginal shaped trees, love caves etc., it is clear that this film deals with the vagina and how it is misconceived.
Vagina dentate is a myth brought about the de-manification by women and their lethal weapon. Now a days I believe the terminology is pussy whipped. In the case of Dawn, the men she comes into contact with or not pussy whipped, they are pussy deprived. Which could also be a reason for said rapings and douchebageries that occur throughout "Teeth."
The film is original, to say the very least. It brings about decent, if not deliberate points on sexuality and the very nature of human beings. Dawn's older step brother Brad is the ying to her yang. He is the anal sex having, rock whiler named Mother owning, hard rock listening, tatoo and piercing loving thug. He also has a thing for Dawn that runs deeper than blood.
The film does have its flaws. The parents play no major role, which hurts the film's credibility. Especially when considering that the mother is sick. Sometimes the laughs are forced. Other times the film comes off a little too campy, mainly from some off dialogue. The other major problem I have (mainly because I have a dick and am not a douche) is that every male character save for the dad is a dirt bag. Either Dawn has the worst luck of any female ever, or Lichtenstein stretched the negativity a little too far.
Never the less, this tale of suppressing ones right to enjoy sexual endeavors is entertaining. Jess Weixler does indeed deserve her Jury Award from Sundance.
